About

Staten Island native Genteel Johnson, better known by her stage name TellyMovez, has been moving to the rhythm of her destiny since the age of five. What began in her grandmother’s basement quickly grew into a passion that would define her life’s work. From step teams she dedicated a decade to, to cheerleading in high school, Johnson’s devotion to movement became undeniable. At just 17 years old, she founded her very first dance team—a glimpse into the leadership and vision that would later shape her career.
But the road wasn’t just about performance; it was about purpose. Johnson longed for a place where dancers could train in an environment that was positive, results-driven, and unapologetically Black-owned. That hunger became her fuel. By 2016, she committed herself fully to the vision God placed within her, stepping into choreography for Tennessee State University’s Find Out Dance Crew.
In 2021, her creative vision expanded beyond teams when she founded Uncut Showcase, a platform designed to give choreographers the spotlight—a stage to present their artistry, originality, and raw talent to the community. That same year, she also revamped her original team, evolving NoXcuses into the powerhouse now known as T-Squad Dance Troupe. The transformation not only gave the program new life but also opened its doors to young men, broadening its impact and reach.
Her breakthrough moment came in 2022, when she performed on a major stage alongside DreamDoll at Summer Jam and Rolling Loud Miami—an achievement that signaled her arrival in the professional dance world. That same year, she made the bold decision to bet on herself, leaving her full-time job to pursue dance full force.
And now, in 2025, Johnson has reached yet another historic milestone: opening the second Black-owned dance studio on Staten Island. What began as a dream in a basement has grown into a legacy—one that empowers a new generation of dancers to believe in themselves, their craft, and the power of community.
Beyond building stages and studios, Johnson also builds opportunities. Understanding the financial barriers many young artists face, she established scholarships and sponsorships for kids who are passionate about dance but cannot afford the cost it takes to reach the next level. Through this commitment, she ensures that talent, drive, and determination—not financial circumstance—determine a dancer’s future.
